Do you want to renew flaked paint? With car paint and the necessary know-how you can do it yourself. It is especially easy touching up or repainting with a spray can. What you should look for when buying car paint and how you can give your car a fresh coat of paint, you can find out here.

What distinguishes car paint?

your car withstands wind and weather, gets covered with pollen in spring and leaves in autumn. moisture and cleaning agents, stone chips and sand – car paints reliably keep all this away from the bare bodywork. Modern automotive coatings also offer UV protection.

Until a few years ago, paints were still based on solvents, but in the meantime water-based finishes have prevailed. When the liquid evaporates, special resins, usually in powder form, curing agents such as isocyanate and the colored pigments combine to form a hard, very resistant surface. Car paint can therefore not be damaged so quickly.

You have the choice between two types of paint:

One-component paints (nitro and alkyd resin paints)

Two-component systems based on acrylic resins

Air drying

Drying only by external addition of hardeners

Today, car paints are usually applied in a multi-layer system:

  • Matt basecoat (if necessary. In several layers)
  • Two-component clearcoat

The coloring basecoat offers hardly any protective properties. First the clearcoat gives the bodywork a comprehensive protective layer against scratches and cracks. By applying the protective paint several times, you increase this.

Can or paint stick: when do I use what??

Car paints are available in different dosage forms:

  • paint cans to apply with a brush
  • Spray can
  • Color pencils

Shake paint cans vigorously and apply the paint with a paint brush or roller. Often one brush stroke is enough for a strong covering power. For this type of painting, it is advisable to bring along a little know-how. Otherwise there is the risk of paint runs or stains. This method is particularly suitable for smaller areas.

With the spray can use the easiest way to paint your car in small areas. By the fine spray mist achieve you get a homogeneous result. But here too, practice is required.

Important: proceed carefully and spray evenly. If too much paint is applied to one area, runners or bubbles will form.

Use a paint stick to touching up small spots. If only a small amount of rust has formed, you do not want to repair scratches or stone chips, the practical pen is the best method. Mostly it has a small wire brush in the cap, sand scratches or mini dents finely first.

How do I find the right colors to touch up??

You are painting a part of your car and notice color differences in the paint? That looks unsightly – and doesn’t have to be. Therefore, do not buy just any red, black or blue. The color tones differ depending on the manufacturer sometimes very strong. The information about the exact color code can usually be found directly in the vehicle on a metal plate. It can be applied in the engine compartment, trunk or vehicle interior conceal. The instruction manual of your car gives you information about the exact location.

Tip: not only the color code, but also manufacturer, type and year of construction of the vehicle are sometimes important for the correct tone. If in doubt, check with your car manufacturer to find out which paint color is right for you.

Clean painting: this is how it’s done

You have bought the right car paint and now you want to get started? Before you paint the entire body, first test the handling on just one part. Start with sanding the existing paint. Use a sanding machine for large areas. Small defects can also be manually roughened with sandpaper.

Tip: start with a medium grit. If this is not enough, go to the next higher level. Then rework the spot with fine sandpaper.

Remove the sanding residues carefully. Otherwise they settle in the paint and form unsightly cracks, dents and irregularities.

Now it goes to the actual paint. These steps are important:

  1. Start with a primer coat. The layer, also known as filler, smoothes the surface and eliminates any remaining sanding marks. Apply the primer in two to three coats and always allow the individual layers to dry thoroughly.
  2. Sand the primer with fine sandpaper and remove all residues.
  3. Now follow with four to five coats of basecoat. When applying the paint, draw wide, horizontal lines. Apply the paint regularly with generous movements.
  4. Move the spray can by one quarter with each new coat. This way the paint layers overlap regularly.
  5. After sufficient drying time, the basecoat is also finely sanded.
  6. Now apply the protective clearcoat in four to five more coats. Again allow plenty of time for drying.

By polishing the paint after work is done, it will preserve a high gloss finish. You can also use a polish to repair any irregularities in the paintwork.
