Bishop Stephan Ackermann observes events in the Archdiocese of Cologne with "great concern". The Trier bishop said the events showed how important the German bishops' agreement with the federal government's abuse commissioner was.

Ackermann, who is also abuse commissioner of the German Bishops' Conference, told the "Trierischer Volksfreund" (Wednesday online) that the debate about the withheld abuse report by the law firm Westpfahl Spilker Wastl (WSW) was again fueling doubts in very many people about the honest will to come to terms with the dioceses in Germany. "This harms us all," the bishop stressed. In Cologne, Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki and his handling of coming to terms with abuse has been under criticism for weeks.

Ackermann went on to say that the events in Cologne showed how important the German bishops' agreement with the federal government's abuse commissioner was. This agreement, reached in 2020, provides for uniform criteria for dealing with sexual abuse. Accordingly, in the future there should be an independent commission in all 27 Catholic dioceses to come to terms with the situation.

Woelki had commissioned the investigation into the handling of cases of sexualized violence by diocesan officials at WSW, but is not having it published as planned. After involving other lawyers, he concluded that the paper had "methodological flaws". Woelki therefore commissioned a new expert to present his findings by 18. to be presented in March.

Reappraisal in Trier

For the diocese of Trier, Ackermann announced that he would give the commission for coming to terms with abuse access to all requested information. He also said that the Commission itself decides to what extent it names names. In any case, he amed that the commission's reports would name those responsible.

The diocese of Trier had started a process in the summer to come to terms with abuse with experts and those affected. The commission is expected to be fully staffed and begin work in a timely manner. So far five members are fixed, two concerned are still missing.
