“Of great importance for the synodal way”

He went along the "synodal way": Now the chairmen of the inner-church synodal forum "Living in Successful Relationships – Living Love in Sexuality and Partnership" have paid tribute to the late theologian Eberhard Schockenhoff.

"We mourn the loss of a person of integrity, a gifted scientist and a credible priest, whose work is and will continue to be of great importance for the Synodal Forum and the Synodal Way," Birgit Mock and Aachen Bishop Helmut Dieser said in Bonn on Tuesday.

Schockenhoff, a member of the synodal forum since 2020, had already participated in the preparatory forum before the launch of the Synodal Way reform dialogue, he said. "As a moral theologian, he advocated further development of Catholic sexual morality."His presentation at the Spring General Assembly of the German Bishops' Conference in Lingen in 2019 has become the basis for the work of the preparatory forum on the Synodal Way, he said.

"In the Synodal Forum 'Living in Successful Relationships' of the Synodal Way, Schockenhoff was a highly committed and highly competent expert and a very valued interlocutor," Mock and Dieser emphasized. He said the work in the forum has benefited greatly from his knowledge of the history of Catholic doctrinal development and from his visions of a "sexual morality that is appropriate for the times and for humanity".

Schockenhoff had died on Saturday at the age of 67 as a result of an accident. He was one of the most renowned German theologians. The funeral service will take place on Friday in Freiburg Cathedral. Requiem begins at 16.00 a.m. Because of Corona requirements, worship attendance limited to just under 200. Schockenhoff will be buried in the closest circle of family and friends.
