Fraud instead of bargains: stolen cars as cheap used cars

The police are currently warning of a new scam involving used cars. Stolen cars are being foisted on buyers at bargain prices. The rude awakening comes at the time of registration.

You’ve probably already had the feeling that something is too good to be true. in view of the latest fraud scam in the purchase of used cars, you should be particularly suspicious of car bargains that are offered at a particularly low price! The scam: on relevant online marketplaces, supposedly price-sensitive vehicles are posted, which later turn out to be stolen vehicles. Bad for the buyer, because both the car and the money are then simply gone. The police in Cologne alone have recorded more than 100 cases to date.

What you can do

It is difficult to identify the perpetrators, because there are hardly any traces of the theft. Fraudsters use everything from throwaway cell phones to stolen personal documents to disguise their own identity. Also the registration papers of the offered vehicles seem at first sight mostly genuine. These often come from break-ins at registration offices.

Under a false name, some of the criminals even rent normal rental cars and then immediately put them on the Internet for a ridiculous price. Sometimes slight grazing damage or similar is deliberately caused in order to justify the low price to some extent. Therefore: always stay alert when buying a used car – and if something seems strange to you, follow the tips of the police and, if in doubt, leave the matter alone. Golden globes: several nominations for germany
