Waukesha/washington – it was supposed to be an idyllic pre-Christmas celebration and ended in a nightmare: an all-terrain vehicle steers into a street parade in a small town in the US state of wisconsin. Many details are still unclear. But the initial information from police is grim.
A car drove into a crowd of people at a pre-Christmas street parade in the US state of Wisconsin. More than 20 people injured, "several dead" reported, the local police said on sunday evening (local time). Investigators did not provide more specific details on the number of dead. Among the victims were reportedly many children: the fire department said eleven adults and twelve children were taken to hospitals.
The incident occurred in waukesha, a suburb of the metropolitan area of milwaukee. the small town hosted the waukesha christmas parade on sunday afternoon (local time).
The background was initially unclear. Among other things, it was open whether the car was intentionally driven into the crowd. The police let at a press conference on sunday evening explicitly open whether there could be a terrorist background.
One person in custody
Waukesha police chief dan thompson said a red suv broke through barriers, drove onto the main parade route and hit more than 20 people, including children. He called it a "tragic incident" and at the same time stressed that there was no further threat. Suspicious vehicle found, one person in custody. He didn’t get any more specific than that. Thompson emphasized that the investigation was ongoing.

Corona also plays a role: this is why the murder rate in the USA is rising dramatically
It was unclear at first whether the person was cooperating with police, he reported CNN. Due to ongoing investigation, streets were to remain closed for 24 hours.
An officer shot at the car to stop it, the police chief said. No passers-by were injured. So far, no shots have been fired from the vehicle.
Vehicle at full speed
Eyewitness angelito tenorio, who at times had also participated in the parade, reported a car "speeding down the parade route". "And then we heard a loud bang and deafening screams from people who were hit by the vehicle", tenorio told the newspaper milwaukee journal sentinel. "And then we saw people running away or stopping crying, and there were people on the ground who looked like they had been hit by the vehicle."

Mysterious: these are nuremberg’s most mysterious murder cases
The float "raced past us", reported chris germain, owner of a dance school whose students participated in the parade. He reported to the station fox6 milwaukee of paramedics who were treating injured people on the street, including children. Among the injured were students from the catholic school in waukesha and a priest, reported CNN citing the archdiocese of milwaukee. Local schools should be closed on monday.
Governor speaks of "senseless act
Many families with children had visited the parade. On initially unverifiable video clips that spread on social media, chaotic and disturbing scenes could be seen: from various perspectives, an off-road vehicle was filmed in different snapshots, first speeding past participants in the parade, then ramming and running over various people in the street procession at another point, and finally breaking through road barriers and speeding away. Video footage shows people screaming and running. In one scene, the car narrowly misses a child dancing in the street.
The governor of wisconsin, tony eversexpressed his dismay in a tweet and spoke of a "senseless act". The white house is monitoring the situation in waukesha and expressing sympathy to those affected, the station reported ABC.
