WSL researchers present structural partial solution for climate change

Climate scientists expect the 21. Century a significant emphasis of the earth, which leads, among other things, to melt the glacier. That’s less problematic because there are people who like to see such glaciers, but especially because glacier rivers dine, which in turn play an important role for agriculture, drinking water supply, electricity production and traffic.

How to deal with the expected climate change is controversial: The German government has previously put on a reduction in the carbon dioxide outlet and on the fact that the energy production of fossil fuels such as OL is replaced by photovoltaics and wind use. Although the goods were not inconcluded because Islamist Olstates such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar could then dust less prere, but for a handling of the consequences of climate heat is only partially suitable because there are (depending on the numerous) about 200 states in the world mostly less developed than Germany and their own economic progress in case of doubt give preference before this abstract goal (cf. Three uncomfortable truths).

Scientists like the Hamburg meteorology professor Hans von Storch and his Friedrichshafen co-author Nico Stehr, therefore, to prepare for climate change not only with carbon dioxide outlets whose reaching is questionable, but also with structural measures such as higher compasses, given flat, powerful sewers and better flourished Cities (cf. Counterkeens climate change by means and "Climate lessons" and CO2 asceticism).

Regional studies crucial

Decisive is for Storch that there is not only global, but also regional studies for climate change. Only so can be found out what regionally concrete and "What opportunities we have to react to changes".

Such a regional study for the Alpine region has a research group of the Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL now in the journal Environmental Research Letters published: The scientists have not only calculated how the expected increase in temperature is expected to be approximately 4.000 Alpeglecker has an impact, but also a model develops how the consequences for the water balance are limited.

Your calculations could be allowed until the end of the 21. Century two-thirds of the amount of water that are missing after a glacier melt, replacing that one stores that during the snowmelt in the spring of the year in the overflow of water that stores the summer over a dozen gross dimme.

Problem landscape and nature conservation

The prerequisite for this is that these dam constructions are not prevented from natural and landscape protectioners, which are mainly in the green parties of the Alpenlander. For example, the Bavarian Grunen Group Chairman Ludwig Hartmann demanded that the construction of all pumped storage power plants is placed on ice – "Alone because of the gigantic procedure in nature". An argument that is very reminiscent of the 1970s and 1980s. A time when politics massively put on nuclear power and said, one can, if the energy roller, which supply nuclear power plants in the smallest space, thus allow some conservatory luxury (cf. Seehofer and grune against pumping storage and heavy blast of Rousseauism).

Another problem that could hinder the structural solutions are the cost of such damme. You may sink if you use new materials, such as the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research (MPIE). An new metal alloy currently presented by this institute combines the apparent contrast firmness and moldability so perfect that relatively dunne components made withstand the same force influence as the much thicker is the same.
