Reaction to the Cologne report: The Waldbroler Carnival Society posthumously revoked a medal from former Cologne Cardinal Joachim Meisner. In addition, the archbishop is deleted from the annals of the association.

This is reported by the internet portal katholisch.en on Thursday. This, he said, was a reaction to the breaches of duty in dealing with sexual abuse, which an expert opinion published in March accused Meisner (1933-2017) of.

Distancing himself from the abuse cases

The former archbishop of Cologne was awarded the "Order Against the Narrow Horizon" in 1992, it was said. The association called the award a special tribute. By revoking the order, he said, he wants to distance himself from the abuses and those accused of them.

Meisner is accused of numerous breaches of duty

In mid-March, lawyers presented an expert opinion on the handling of abuse cases in the Archdiocese of Cologne. It proves eight senior officials committed a total of 75 breaches of duty between 1975 and 2018. Meisner is credited with almost one third of the misconduct. The former archbishop is said to have failed to investigate suspicious cases and to have violated his duty of care to victims. Acting Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki was exonerated.
