A court in the southern Indian state of Kerala has revoked the bail of Bishop Franco Mulakkal, accused of raping a religious woman, and ied a warrant for his arrest. Mulakkal be on 13. July did not appear for a session of the court.

This reported the Asian press service Ucanews on Tuesday with reference to the decision of the court. Just a week ago, the court rejected a motion by the bishop's lawyers to drop the charges because of insufficient evidence. Lawyers now seek to have charges against their client quashed in India's Supreme Court.

Accusation of multiple rape

Franco Mulakkal (56), bishop of Jalandhar in the northwestern Indian state of Punjab since 2013, is accused of multiple rapes of a nun from the Order of the Missionaries of Jesus at a convent in Kerala between 2014 and 2016. Mulakkal denies the accusations. Due to the accusations of the nun, Bishop Mulakkal had been arrested in September 2019. After three weeks, he was released on bail and travel restrictions. Last February, a second woman religious accused the bishop of sexual assault.
