Border violating behavior

Erftstadt pastor Winfried Jansen has been relieved of all duties in his pastoral area by the Archdiocese of Cologne. Fr. Jansen is accused of sexual border violations in the 1970s.

The statement of those affected was detailed and credible, the archdiocese announced on Monday. Rev. Jansen has admitted his border violating behavior towards the child at that time. In accordance with canon law, the Archdiocese of Cologne will now inform the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which alone must decide how to proceed. The dismissal of Fr. Jansen had taken place for the duration of the proceedings. His duties as parish administrator will be carried out by Dechant Hans-Peter Kippels until further notice.

In a letter from the pastor to the congregations in the pastoral area, which several media published, the 73-year-old writes that the allegations are "about my behavior towards a girl who was about nine years old at the time, but not about sexual abuse". He feels that the fact that he was given leave of absence before the proceedings had been completed is already a judgment that deeply affects him personally.

The parishes in the pastoral area were informed at an extraordinary parish meeting on 1. February in St. Barbara Liblar informed about the process. In the process, offers of help and talks with experts from the Archdiocese of Cologne were also arranged, which can be taken up if desired.
